How to Effectively Use Social Media for Business

How to Effectively Use Social Media for Business by Wendy Moore

The use of social networking sites to connect people has become so widespread today. But other than those who just want to communicate with friends, old and new, the social media is also currently being taken advantage by business oriented people as a way to reach their target clients and improve their businesses. People involved in small business have found a powerful marketing tool in these social networking sites.

Among the top social media used by business people these days are the Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. With these sites, they are able to expose their businesses to more people on an international level.

Facebook

Facebook has become highly popular in recent years attracting millions of users from across the globe. This popularity has, in fact, led the site’s management to offer marketing platforms that encourage people to share their business endeavors and build communities as well.

To use Facebook to your advantage, make sure to create an interesting personal profile page. Include photos and business information that will attract visitors to read through. Update your information every now and then so that potential clients would know what you’re up to.

Discuss recent happenings regarding your endeavors and interact with readers who post comments on your page. Be friendly at all times and don’t forget to invite clients to be part of your “fans” group.

Twitter

Twitter has attracted a good following in just a few years. One edge of Twitter over the others is that it allows you to know the activities and conversations of other people.

For business people who want to maximize the vast communication potential of this social networking site, it’s best to be consistent at all times when tweeting. This means providing information that will not only make visitors aware of your worthwhile endeavors but will teach them tips and strategies.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the most ideal site for entrepreneurs because of its ability to grow your business with less money involved. It is used by many professionals to search for potential employees and expand their business contacts.

Providing a detailed profile (business information and photos) is the best way to expand your network of contacts through LinkedIn. You can include a link to your website or blog where people can get access to more information about you and your business. Interaction is helpful and you can do this by answering questions that provide valuable and interesting information.

YouTube

YouTube is a phenomenal success in terms of video sharing on the internet. This social networking site has become second to Google in terms of search volumes.

If your business has not tried live video streaming yet, it’s time you do because videos are powerful tools in drawing online traffic. Create a short but clear video featuring yourself talking about your business endeavors and how you started out. Later on, you can create several short videos (seminars you conduct, Powerpoint presentations you make, business projects) and upload them on YouTube to save you from storage costs. Make sure as well that you post videos in the category relevant to your business to draw the right target audience.

In using social media to market and improve your business, building trust with readers is essential. And you can only do this by being honest and consistent in providing interesting and valuable insights. What matters is that you share experiences and knowledge that can influence people’s lives and encourage them to take action.

What is Twitter and Why Should You Join?

If you are like many. You are wondering
what the heck is TWITTER.

If you are like SOME, you have already
realized that Twitter has become one of
the most revolutionary communication tools
on the planet.

Heck, even the new President of the USA,
Barack Obama, uses Twitter. In fact, he
has more followers that ANYONE in the world.

Why is Twitter one of the most revolutionary
communications tools?

Well, imagine if you combined the following:

- Blogging (Twitter is actually Micro Blogging)
- SMS text messaging
- Instant Messaging
- Chat Rooms
- Communities Forums and Social Networks
- Personal Email
- Email Broadcasting
- Search
- Viral Marketing

What would you have?

You would have the most addicting, most
powerful, and most incredible communication
tool ever made.

TWITTER is a relationship building tool.
It’s similar to the “What are you doing” or “Mood” on MySpace,
only on steroids.

It works with your Laptop or PC or MAC. It
works on your iPhone or cell phone.

There are dozens of “Apps” and websites
popping up that support it for sending
not just quick updates, but pictures
and even maps of where you are right now.

I would LOVE to tell you all the cool
“Apps” there is for Twitter, but for now
I just want to talk to you about Twitter
and maybe a few “APPS” you should use.

First off let me get this point out.

YOU WILL NOT UNDERSTAND what the heck TWITTER
is until you

1 - Join
2 - Follow 10 people you like (you can search for people)
3-  Make your first “Tweet”

I also HIGHLY recommend you install “Twhirl” (Google it)

Twhirl allows you to use Twitter more effectively,
sort of like a an Instant Messenger Client like
Yahoo Instant Messenger or AIM etc…

So what Tweets are good?

Anything really.

- What you are reading now.
- Ask a question
- Take a poll
- What you thought of a TV show you just watched
- When your new website is going to launch
- Ask what is a good name for your new book
- A picture of your cat
- Ask what are the top 10 MUST HAVE Twitter Apps.
- Reply to someone else’s tweet publicly or private to them.
- Retweet someone else’s tweet that you like.

YOU NAME IT…

It is my predication, as well as MANY, that Twitter
will become a MUST have tool for your business and life.

Start using it and start “tweeting” and watch how
people start to follow you.

Hint: reply to other peoples Tweets with interesting
stuff, and people will find you. Why? That person
will reply with YOUR name and many will see you.

Example if You reply to me. I may reply to you like

@johndoe, You really did not like that movie. I did.
But I will make sure to watch the Owen Wilson one as you
suggested.

Now 500 of my followers will see his name and can
follow him with 1 click! Now John Doe can communicate
with his followers.

When I first started using Twitter, my followers
we’re slow. It took me MONTHS to get to 200 people
following me

I am now getting about 5 - 8 new followers per day.

I even added a note in my SIG file when I email
people to follow me on Twitter and put logs
to do the same on my blog.

*** So I will make a deal with you ***

Follow me and…

…I WILL FOLLOW YOU. FOREVER

(As long as you do not SPAM or just
trash talk etc.. - Oh, and please
upload a photo or avatar and fill
out your profile. Trust me it helps.)

So if you want me to follow YOU as well,
just get started and follow me.

You can update your MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, Pownce, Tumblr, FriendFeed, Friendster and more sites using ping.fm. That’s one of my secrets.
Another secret is you can schedule your tweets. For the last month I have scheduled quotes on my Twitter to post every other day or so. I did this all in one setting. After they post to my Twitter, then they post to FriendFeed and Facebook automatically. Get more friends, build relationships, find jobs, create business networks, update them more often and leverage your time.
